Allen Chapel and an affiliated school were established in 1876 by the Reverend William B. Hammond in a building that would later become the Dunbar School. In 1879, Hammond sold a piece of property in Upper Alton to his congregation. The present church building was completed in 1880. In the early 1940s, the structure was remodeled and covered with brick siding. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. It is located in the Midtown Neighborhood Historic District.
