The Nation of Islam was established in 1930 by WD Fard and developed in Detroit by Elijah Muhammad, who later moved to Chicago, where he was arrested for draft dodging. During his imprisonment he expanded his ministry, teaching Black superiority, self-discipline, integrity, honor, self sufficiency and racial segregation. In the 1950s, the American Muslims established this mission in St. Louis. They also owned and operated several businesses in the 1900 block of Grand Avenue.
