Founded by twelve African American members in 1878, Antioch Baptist Church has been integral to the Ville neighborhood's spiritual and cultural life. The congregation's growth led to the construction of a new sanctuary in 1921, designed in the Late Gothic Revival style by architect W.B. Robinson and built by T.J. Ward Construction Co. This red brick structure features distinctive buttresses, a crenelated corner tower, and large Gothic-arched windows. Throughout the 20th century, Antioch Baptist Church remained a steadfast institution amid the challenges of segregation and urban change. Notably, it was among the first in St. Louis to initiate Head Start preschool programs, reflecting its commitment to community development. Despite demographic shifts, the church continues to thrive, symbolizing resilience and continuity in the Ville.
