Located in the Greater Ville neighborhood of north St. Louis, the house at 3137 Whittier Street was home to Chuck Berry and his family from 1950 until 1958. Built in 1910, the one-story red brick house features a small addition constructed by Berry in 1956 to accommodate his growing family and possibly to provide space for musical practice sessions.
During his time at this residence, Berry wrote and recorded many of his most famous songs, such as "Maybellene," "Roll Over Beethoven," "Sweet Little Sixteen," and "Johnny B. Goode." These works played a significant role in shaping the sound of rock 'n' roll and cemented Berry's status as a musical innovator.

In 2008, the house was added to the National Register of Historic Places due to its association with Berry's influential career. However, the property has since fallen into disrepair. A structural survey conducted in 2023 revealed issues such as roof damage, cracked brickwork, and deteriorated walls and ceilings.
The City of St. Louis, through its Land Reutilization Authority, currently owns the vacant property. Efforts are underway to stabilize and restore the house, with plans to develop it into a museum and cultural center as part of a broader initiative to revitalize the neighborhood and honor its rich African American heritage.
If you're interested in visiting or learning more about the restoration efforts, the City of St. Louis periodically releases updates and requests for proposals related to the property's redevelopment.
