The Clyde C. Jordan Stadium was built in 1991 as an athletic facility shared by Lincoln High School and East St. Louis Senior High School. One of the primary teams using the field is the East St. Louis Flyers football team, which has long been a source of pride in the community. Bob Shannon joined the Flyers’ coaching staff in 1970 and became head coach in 1978. Over 15 seasons, his teams won 152 out of 173 games and secured six state championships. Shannon also helped dozens of players earn college football scholarships and was named High School Coach of the Year five times by The Sporting News. On January 18, 1993, Bob Shannon and his wife, Jeanette, were honored guests at President Bill Clinton’s “Faces of Hope” pre-inaugural luncheon in Washington, D.C., along with 53 other community leaders from across the country.
