Colored School #10, originally named Cheltenham Colored School, was founded in 1877 to provide education for African American children in the Cheltenham neighborhood of St. Louis. In 1890, the school was relocated to Northrup and Pattison Streets and renamed Vashon Colored Elementary School in honor of George Boyer Vashon, a prominent African American educator and abolitionist. The school operated until 1908, playing a crucial role in the education of Black students during a time of segregation.
