East St. Louis
Donald McHenry Elementary School
2700 Summit Avenue
Open to public / Not Open to public
This school reopened in 1980, five years after a fire had destroyed its building; it had originally been the Slade School, established in 1909.
The School was renamed for Donald F. McHenry, a native of East St. Louis who graduated from Lincoln High School. He went on to Illinois Stated University, earning his bachelor's degree in 1957 and his master's degree in 1959. After a teaching stint at Howard University in Washington D.C., he joined the Department of State in 1963 and rose through the ranks. In 1971 he was guest scholar at the Brookings Institution, then became a project director at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. President Jimmy Carter named McHenry to the post of Deputy Representative to the United Nations Security Council in 1977.
On September 23, 1979, McHenry was sworn in as the fourteenth and youngest-ever United States Representative to the United Nations. He served until January 20, 1981. As chief United States representative to the United Nations, he was also a member of President Carter's Cabinet. He became a University Research Professor of Diplomacy and International Relations at Georgetown University and president of the IRC Group, Inc., an international consulting firm. In 1980, an East St. Louis street on which McHenry had lived as a child was renamed to honor him.
The school closed in 2013.
