L’Ouverture Elementary School was founded in 1925 in Richmond Heights, Missouri, to provide educational opportunities for Black students who had been attending schools in neighboring Webster Groves. The school was named in honor of Pierre Dominique Toussaint L’Ouverture, the leader of the Haitian Revolution, who played a pivotal role in ending slavery in Haiti and establishing the first independent Black republic in the Western Hemisphere.
The establishment of L’Ouverture Elementary was a significant milestone for the African American community in Richmond Heights, offering a dedicated space for Black children to receive quality education during a time of segregation. The school not only served as an educational institution but also as a symbol of resilience and the community's commitment to self-determination.
