The People's Hospital was organized as a small private hospital in 1894. It was incorporated under the name Provident Hospital and renamed in 1918. For many years it was the only place where black physicians and surgeons could treat private patients. Before moving to the Locust Street site the hospital was located at 3447-49 Pine Street. In 1898, a nurses program for black women began there. At its peak it was a 75 bed short-term general hospital. It closed in 1978.
